Where is your data? Who hosts that data? What contracts are in force to protect your data being "handed over" to third parties at a whim? If Police Scotland struggle to get their head around the implications of their actions, how are SMEs supposed to cope? Do SMEs have the legal wherewithal to understand the Cloud Act? Here’s an important warning about something that could affect your business: A security flaw has been found in Microsoft Bookings. The popular tool is used for scheduling appointments – but the flaw could allow scammers to create unauthorised accounts and get hold of false certificates. Why should you be worried? If scammers create fake accounts pretending to be senior people in your business, they could trick your employees into sharing sensitive information. This could give them access to your business systems and even let them reset passwords, locking you out of all your accounts. If your business uses Microsoft 365, it’s doubly important to be aware of this issue. The security flaw comes from a feature in Microsoft Bookings called 'Shared Booking Pages”, which is usually turned on by default under the Microsoft 365 licence. When someone creates a shared booking page, it creates a new account without going through the usual security checks. This is how scammers can slip through the cracks. This security alert is a reminder of how important it is to keep an eye on the tools we use every day. Check if you’re using Microsoft Bookings in your business and consider disabling it if you don't need it. It’s also a good idea to keep your systems updated and have an IT expert (like us) review your security settings. It can go a long way towards protecting your business. If you use WhatsApp as a means to communicate with anyone in or out of your business, you're desensitising your business to the threat from WhatsApp scamming. There is no good way to use a data harvester in your business, company or organisation. If your security plan is that you ONLY use a messenger such as Threema for your internal communications then anything set up in another messaging app is instantly suspicious. Blurring the lines and allowing "some" use of something like WhatsApp for any sort of company communication is opening the door to scams. You've got to be thinking different. You've got to have that defensive mindset. If you're not, chances are your competition will be and they'll only be too happy to nab your customers following your inevitable data breach. Understand the threat. Assess the risk. Do the right thing.

If you are going to send a phishing email pretending to be from DVLA, then it is probably not a good idea to send it to the ex-DVLA Chair, include spelling and grammar mistakes, an ancient GSI email suffix and a .net email addy that has nothing whatsoever to do with DVLA! #justsaying

Genuinely worth a look if you're in the market for Vulnerability scanning. We've found some good results with this helping specific sectors, now we're opening the offer up. We also do a level of OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) gathering during the exercise. Of course, if scanning seems a bit boring, the alternative is having my good self-whizzing you through about 70'ish PowerPoint slides which mostly act as a discussion point to go through useful security guidance to your business. Most of the stuff in there is a mixture of 1) stuff we've learned running a SOC 2) stuff we've found annoys adversaries and red teams a lot and 3) some animated hippos and a where's Wally challenge. Genuinely though, these are good offers and worth your time. They've been useful to C-Level and technologists. It's nerdy in places, but then it delivers stuff you can actually do without buying stuff from us/other providers, so you'll definitely get something good.
