Reflecting on a year marked by impressive progress and innovation in the quantum industry, as we celebrate World Quantum Day today! 🚀 🌍 Quantum technology has now taken centre stage in important global discussions. We have had a year full of industry collaborations and research, delving into the real-world impact of quantum in sectors ranging from automotive to financial services and healthcare. After the American Physical Society Meeting last month, we highlighted our work and spoke about the applications of hybrid-quantum tech. The American Physical Society's March Meeting 2024 was a very special one as it marked the 125th anniversary of American Physical Society. We are very happy that our video, highlighting the cutting-edge work that Terra Quantum AG is doing with hybrid quantum computing, was part of it. It featured interviews with representatives of our leadership team: Markus Pflitsch, Dr. Florian Neukart, Vishal Shete and Prof. Valerii Vinokur. ⚡️We describe our Quantum-as-a-Service approach and selected use cases for customers: optimization, simulation and machine learning. 💥We are proud to announce that Terra Quantum AG’s quantum key distribution (#QKD) research is in the Top 100 Physics papers published in Scientific Reports (Springer Nature Group) for 2023. Boosting Image Classification with Quantum Machine Learning 🔊Terra Quantum AG researchers have developed two new image processing techniques that show the power of combining classical deep learning architectures and quantum machine learning (#QML) algorithms to improve the efficiency and accuracy of image classification. Through the novel TQml algorithm library, these unique hybrid architectures and quantum layers will be accessible for industrial use. 📈Both new networks outperform their classical counterparts in the famous MNIST benchmark while reducing the overall number of parameters. The first hybrid model demonstrates a record-breaking 99% accuracy while being 8 times smaller than its classical counterpart. Relying on a hybrid approach, the study was designed with current quantum hardware in mind and assumed seamless integration of quantum circuits within classical layers. The quantum parts were specifically simulated using Pennylane and the open-source machine learning framework, PyTorch was also used. 🚗We believe that these results pave the way for further research in developing hybrid models that utilize the strengths of both classical and quantum computing in tasks such as medical imaging, Earth intelligence, robotics and autonomous vehicles. The paper, “Quantum machine learning for image classification,” has been published in the IOP Publishing Machine Learning: Science and Technology journal.
