Publication charges to update in 2025
Dear Quantum community,
We want to update authors on an important change in Quantum Journal’s publication fees (also known as article processing charges or APCs). From January 2025, the default publication fee for Quantum will be €600. This is an increase of €150 over the previous fee, which has been €450 for the past few years. Note that the options to pay a reduced fee or to waive the fee completely will still be there, for researchers without access to publishing funding.
There are two reasons for this update:
- Personnel costs and running expenses. Since the last fee update, we have witnessed long-term inflation in Europe. In that period, we adjusted the salaries of our employees, in accordance with collective bargaining agreements, with cumulative gains of over 10%. In addition, we also increased their working hours to be able to meet the increasing workload derived from the large number of submissions.
- Investment in technical developments. In line with the increased submission rate and challenges in the editorial process, we also want to automatise further processes and keep improving the website and publication experience. For that purpose we would need to outsource some programming work that exceeds the current time constraints of the board.
These new publication fees will hopefully enable us to focus on a coordinated effort to improve processing times of manuscripts and keep Quantum and its non-profit character stable in the long term. For details on Quantum’s financial situation, you may consult Quantum’s open accounting.
Best wishes for 2025 from Quantum’s team!
