PhD Position in Quantum Simulation at RWTH Aachen and FZ Jülich (Germany)
We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join the Theoretical Quantum Technology group at RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich on quantum simulation with atoms and molecules.
Neutral atoms in optical tweezer arrays are one of the leading platforms for quantum technologies. Ultracold molecules are quickly advancing as a platform with complementary advantaes and disadvantages. Quantum simulation on these platforms promises to answer questions beyond the reach of classical computers. However, so far, noise limits the utility of quantum simulation to very specific settings. The project will develop theoretical and numerical methods to simulate the quantum many-body dynamics in these quantum simulators. This will inform experiments to build harware-efficient quantum simulators with an eye on chemistry.
The successful applicant will become an integral member of our team and will benefit from the strong interdisciplinary research environment in Aachen and Jülich, including access to local high-performance compute clusters. The PhD position is fully funded for 3 years at E13 (75%) level, with possibilities for an up to 1-year extension.
Ideal candidates will hold a master’s degree in physics or a related field, and are highly motivated to research at the intersection of molecular and atomic physics and quantum information theory. Experience with scientific programming (julia, matlab, python, …) and especially numerical work is advantageous. Undergraduate or master’s research experience in atomic and molecular physics or quantum physics is advantageous.
Please send your applications to d.wellnitz@fz-juelich.de. Applications should include a cover letter (including a letter of motivation and research interests), a CV, and a master’s transcript (if available). We welcome applications from all qualified candidates, and especially encourage those from traditionally underrepresented groups in physics. The position will remain open until filled.
