University of Manchester & University of Tokyo Dual PhD Position
Dear all,
I’m happy to announce an exciting and unique PhD opportunity — a 4-year dual degree, with two years spent in Manchester and two years in Tokyo, jointly supervised by Mio Murao and myself (Philip Taranto).
Full details about the project and how to apply can be found in the linked advertisement.
About the programme
The dual award PhD programme — launched in May 2023 — complements the wider academic cooperation agreement between our two institutions. Postgraduate researchers are jointly selected and split their time between Manchester and Tokyo, benefiting from the expertise, facilities, and infrastructure of two globally renowned institutions. Students are awarded a degree from both institutions, based on a single research experience managed cooperatively.
Why undertake a dual award?
– Immerse yourself in a new culture and gain a truly international research experience.
– Join a talented cohort addressing challenges across science and engineering, choosing from a range of projects.
– Develop a global perspective and international networks that open doors to diverse career opportunities in academia and industry.
– Build intercultural skills and become part of a community of researchers with a genuinely global outlook.
Desirable skills
This is a theory-focused project, and we are looking for candidates with a strong background in quantum information theory, quantum computation, quantum foundations, or related areas. We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate:
– Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the capacity to learn new methods quickly.
– The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team.
– Clear communication skills, including presenting research in writing and talks.
– Motivation to develop an independent research profile while contributing to broader project goals.
We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds, and particularly welcome those from groups currently underrepresented in STEM. The position is fully funded, covering tuition fees and a living stipend for the full four years.
Application deadline: 27 April 2026. Start date: April 2027.
Please feel free to reach out to myself / Mio for further information.
Best wishes,
Philip
